A Survey of Infant Feeding and Supplementary Practice in Gong-Ju City, 1994


Abstract
The purpose of this survey is to determine the relationship between demographic information of mother and infant and feeding type, and to provide basic data of health teaching and nursing intervention for the promotion of breast-feeding.
The subjects were a convenience sample of 115 mothers in Gong-ju city.
Data collection was carried out from May 6th to June 4th 1994 using a questionnaire of 45 questions, 18 on the type of feeding, 11 on supplementary feeding, 16 on dermographic information of mother and infant.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. In the high educational group of mother, the rate of artificial feeding is relatively high.
2. Successful breast-feeding is related to education about nutrition and feeding on infant.
3. Feeding type is related significantly to age, sex, birth weight of infant.
4. Statistical difference is noted between the type of delivery and the type of feeding during the admission.
5. The rate of breast-feeding is 28.7 %, artificial feeding is 48.7 %, and mixed feeding is 22.6 %.
6. The rate of colostridum feeding is 68.7 %, and the rate of breast-feeding in the group of colostridum feeding is higher than others.
7. The most frequent reason of artificial feeding is breast milk insufficiency.
8. The supplementary feeding is carried out in 57.4 %.
9. The major source of information of feeding and nutrition is public magazines and mass media.
